Into the underground!

Thursday 31 May 2007

One step into the gaping void of this cave would be enough to instil awe in even the most seasoned traveller, Me included.

This place was massive, enormous, gigantic, large, colossal, grand, humungous, immense, titanic, vast, and I do believe I’m now out of appropriate words from my thesaurus! None of these words do justice to this natural beauty.

I was travelling on a quest to discover the Hodemines secrets, This had lead me to find the entrance to this cave and report its whereabouts. Well, what kind of adventurer would I be if I just stopped at finding it?

As I travelled deeper into the dark abyss the light from the entrance slowly faded. It was at this time I was almost ready to turn back, as without a torch my chances of progressing further inside were close to naught! And would be suicidal at best! As I looked around in the minute glow that remained from the entrance, I noticed that there was not 1, but 1 feint glows, one in either direction!

If this was another exit to the cave I could be going to where no one had been before! Or at least, no one had been in a long time.

I decided to continue forwards into the cave, but as the glow from the entrance faded, more and more faint lights started to appear in the distance. As I approached closer and closer, I was amazed to find crystals of all sizes and colours on the wall emanating a disliking glow that illuminated the entire cavern!

Aided by the newfound light I decided it would be best If I had a quick look around the cave,
however in non adventuring language this tends to equate to running around like a headless chicken until you get extremely disorientated and very, very lost!

After walking for a short while I started top hear a light sound of trickling water, as I progressed the light trickle ended up as a roar as I found myself at a large subterranean waterfall. Which I rather promptly, well I fell of to be honest, while peering over the edge to see how far down it went I slipped off the wet rock and fell 75 odd feet into the freezing water.

Now this would usually slow down most people, unfortunately I was one of them. But unfortunately for me the rather angry Cornuts that I landed on wasn’t. I started to run through the cave, deeper and deeper through the labyrinth of identical caves until I wound up in a bit of a odd situation, continue forwards down a very steep, very wet incline, or turn around and try to sneak past my angry little friend.

Well, as you have already surmised my shoes don’t have that much grip, as I turned to try to find my way back out, I slipped on a Poporing and tumbles backwards down the slippery rock banging my head on the way down, several times.

When I came to I found myself in a much, much, larger cavern. After walking around for a short time I found 2 old people down here! One of them was a old blacksmith, he had a long white bears yet a well upkeep appearance, and the other, an old woman, one would assume his wife, was selling items! After a quick hello I started to run, pretty much as fast as I could away from these 2 people, By this point I had 2 ideas. One, I had hit my head a lot harder than I thought, or Two, Those were some messed up weirdoes the kind you really do not want to socialise with!

Yo ho, Yo ho, A newbies life for me.

Tuesday 29 May 2007

Love love After a recent uproar in Prontera, a large amount of adventurers were requested to travel back to Hod. The village halls had changed their reception to new adventurers, and as so many new adventurers travel through, they decided they should test out their new systems.

As I walked through own I noticed little difference, Bulletin boards scattered around, though a lot more requests than I could remember, extremely trivial quests, missions, gathering of items, the same old thing, but It seems this has become a lot more popular that everyone is getting the adventurers to do their dirty work.

The crystals, yeeessss!

I decided to stop into the amour shop to see if they had received in any new shipments from Prontera and the mainland. As I stepped through the door I was greeted with a face… in my face! Startled and jumping backwards I realized that it was the amour seller. Seems she had recognized me and kept back some good high level stock for returning adventurers. But not only that, she had doubled, no tripled her stock! Shields of all shapes and sized, amour far greater than I would have ever seen passing through

run away! I sat down in the corner while talking to the store assistant lugging heavy amour out from the back, when I noticed that these new adventurers were churning out their pockets a lot more that I could expect. I shouted out to a girl of small stature trying to drag her new amour from the floor onto her shoulders how much it had cost her.

I fell over in a heap when I saw her receipt, something had to be wrong. I checked it again, and again, the price of these new wears was extraordinary high! I quickly handed the small paper scrap back to the girl and ran out of the door straight to the other shops in town, skills for 1080r, and headgears for 2000r! This is madness!

Closed beta report Day 10

There was a chilling breeze blowing off the seas, as if to warn of the impending attack. However, it was not warning me, but warning them.

The plan was simple; I would advance my troop, myself, southwards from the allied beach, once submerged make a feint to the south west, before assaulting their beach head at the weakest point.

From here I would advance following the curve of the mounting to defend my flank, before advancing up the mountain itself to claim the island. There was a very real chance I would not come out of this battle, alive.

The advance was set, and as the beach head drew closer so did the anticipation of the first assault. Their defenses were tight, and they would attack in force, in groups. The numbers were against me, at least 75 to one. It was almost unfair, to them.

As I breeched the front lines their first attackers assaulted head on, groups of suicide attacks in teams of threes. They were weak but their numbers were their power. Slashing enemies aside like paper I tore through their ranks, but as soon as I fell another would take their place. Not even Thermopylae saw such carnage!

The sheer numbers started to wear me down as I came close to the mountains ascent. Fighting their forces up hill would be the final challenge with attacks from both above and below. Once I reached the summer though the battle would me mine, and a rewarded rest and drink in the tavern all around to celebrate the victory.

As I plunged my blade through the final enemy on the summit the battle was ours, mine, what ever! The battle was over; the isle of Porings had suffered my vengeance for its attacks on me so many months ago.

Closed beta report Day 9

As I stepped through the gates of the city I took a deep sign of relief. It had been several weeks since I last left Prontera. In this time I had travelled further than ever before. Seen sights very few had seen before. These gates offered a sanctuary against the foes that i had seen as well. For the time being, at least, I would try not to venture too far from this safety.

As I walked down the road towards the city square I came across the notice board. It had been so long since I last came here, he board was packed with notices and messages. Stopping for a moment I took a look through the different requests for help. I was startled to see another request from the castles liaison officer. Thinking this might finally be a chance for a quick and safe zeny I noted down the details and headed off to the square.

As I arrived at the square the sun was slowly setting in the sky. The glow of the sun behind the church lit up the stained windows making it look, almost ethereal. It had been a long time since I had last visited the grave of my parents. The grave yard was eerily quiet with a cooling breeze glowing through it. I didn’t want to spend too long in this place. After paying my respects I headed up the grassy path towards the castle.

The shelter from the castle was welcoming, the seasons were changing and summer had just ended, the nights were getting longer, and getting colder. Not a good time to be venturing far from the warmth of the city, and the taverns. After talking to the liaison officer I was delighted to hear that this mission was a mere delivery request. However it required me to have an audience with the king himself. I have not met him myself, he spends all of his time in his throne room, however since his wife died rumour has it he has never sat on his throne.

The king wished a reprimand delivered to the owner of the local tavern. I was starting to understand why this was such a well paying request for such simple work. The tavern in question was owned by a large bulky soldier of the Prontera chivalry. Not the kind of person you want to get on the bad side of. I made haste out of the castle hoping to find a bed for the night.

As I came closer and closer to the tavern I could hear the sounds of merry cheering and shouting. Little did I know this shouting would soon be directed towards me. I swung the doors open the drinking and cheering did not cease, My intrusion wasn’t even noticed. I walked up to the counter and handed the reprimand letter to the rather bulky maid, she vanished around the back of the tavern for a moment before the owner came out. Without a word I found myself being flung out of the doors. It seemed I would be spending the night outside under the stars.

I almost miss killer monsters.

Maike's newbie journey (CBR 7-8)

As I went to the mail box to collect the odd trinkets my brother oft sends me on his travels, I came across a strange photograph. The usual sort of picture I get from him is of some great defeated foe, or magnificent piece of scenery he knew I’d love to see one day when I’m allowed out into the world. Though that day I thought was still far off.

Written on the back of the photo was a short message; “I’m going on a long trip, far into the outlands. There’s no mail here so you won’t hear from me for several weeks. I made a promise to Mum and Dad before they died that I would look after you, but you’re now old enough to travel by yourself”

Amazed at the contents of the message, and not wanting to read anymore mail just incase he sent another letter changing his mind; I grabbed some supplies and ran off in search of adventure.

I ended up in a rather dark and gloomy underground, well serer I suppose. This wasn’t the first choice of places to travel to, nothing like the mountains and forests my brother has seen. But I knew I had to press on, and I wouldn’t let some tunnel stop me!

As I traveled further down the tunnel I came across a small message board standing just off the main path. To my surprise there was a notice posted asking for help from an adventurer. They needed someone to, find a scroll or something they had lost. I’m not even sure if they lost it the handwriting was almost illegible. In either case this was my first chance, I ripped the notice off the board and headed down the tunnel.

To my surprise the man I had to inquire about the quest looked, well dead. I couldn’t blame him, he did seem to spend an awful long time in this sewer, I can only hope he was looking for this scroll and not staying down here by choice. I waved the notice in front of him and handed it to him, from arms reach I might add, He have me a side wards glance as it to wonder if I was up to the task, however I don’t think this area gets many visitors so he reluctantly filled me in on what needed to be done.

A while ago he had dropped a letter for his friend in some supplies that were being carried through the sewer, he wanted me to find the supplies and get back that letter, and then deliver it to his friend who was closer to the exit. Well Not wanting to hand around, the smell was getting to me at this point I ran off down the cave to where I found some boxes.

It wasn’t hard to find the letter, The first box I cracked open had it sitting just on the top, In fact it was the only thing in the box, how he could spend so long down here was beyond me. I grabbed the letter and ran further down the tunnel. This place was starting to seem as if it was closing in on me.

As I approached the exit I found this pretty girl looking around as if she had gotten kidnapped and dumped in this awful place. I asked her if there was anything wrong and she looked at me, glanced at my hand and started thanking me. Turns out she was the creepy guys friend that I was to deliver the letter to. Could have been his girlfriend, I can understand why he didn’t want her to see him after he’d been down here.

As I came further out of the tunnel I was met by a massive door, wide open yet I couldn’t see how anyone could possibly close it, Far too impractical. Either way I climbed the stairs to the door and went through. As I emerged from the darkness my eyes were overwhelmed with light momentarily, until I was finally outside. Strangely the door behind me stood closed, and it as dark outside, I have no idea how Long I was in that tunnel either.

The air outside was so refreshing after going through those sewers, so clean and crisp. I was wondering just where I had ended up at this point though. I could see the sea in the distance and there were trees all around, along with those Pukui that Syaoran had sent me pictures of weeks ago. A little bit down the path I ran into a strange guy, he kept swinging his sword around. Though he was a really good guy. He pointed me down the road and told me there was a special route for novice adventurers to follow, from one notice board to another.

He marked my map with magic, to show a small red dot where I needed to go. I started off down the road and it was a bit of a trek, but I eventually visited several people and had a small introduction to fighting monsters. As I found the last set of items I needed to please one of the people I had visited along the path I came across a large stone bridge in the south west of the small island. It was starting to get early and I was feeling quite hungry so I decided to try to hunt down a bakery or at least a grocery shop.

As I was walking down the road in town I walked past another notice board, however this one was totally covered in requests for adventures. These even had some good rewards. One reward was a big load of bread. Taking down the quest information I ran off to find my would be employer.

As It turned out the owner of the Item shop was after some random items dropped off some strong monsters. He was a little cautious of me going out due to me not having much experience at this sort of thing. I assured him that I could cope, not only because this was my dream to travel and id need to get stronger, but that I was now starving and really needed the reward!

I headed out of the northern gates of town onto another small island. Not really knowing what was going to give up these items on their death bed I started attacking anything, and everything that I thought I could manage. My fists started to hurt from so much fighting. I would have liked to have used the knife my brother left at home that I was carrying around, but Right now I was far worried I’d end up cutting myself.

Sheer hunger ended up driving me towards trying to fight using the knife, I was quite uneasy at first, I’m really not used to this whole stabbing and slashing thing. Though I by the time I’d gathered up the materials I was getting quite good. Though all this fighting was making me extremely tired.

As I started back to town the heavens opened up and it started to pour rain across the entire area. Winds blew up a fine mist and the chilling sea air made it really not nice outside. I ran back to town when I came across a small medical outpost. While taking shelter in the tent I spoke to the assistant. Apparently this is where adventurers go to sell their items, stock up on supplies and recover their wounds after getting knocked out and brought back by others. I turned out my bag and asked him is I had anything worth selling. After a few seconds he quickly grabbed up several items and handed me a large bag of coins. I could hardly believe it so much money for such little work, all be it extremely tiring and rather dangerous work.

After running back to the item shop, and savoring the bread, The best I’d ever had by the way,, I decided to head over to the armor shop and pick up some new clothes. My experience outside had taught me that Equipment was essential, that if I was going to get anywhere near my brothers level I’d have to be prepared. The shop had a large array of different pieces of clothing, After picking out a new shirt, some gloves and a pair of trousers I went to try them on, but without any changing rooms I had to duck behind the shop to make sure no one was peeking.

After picking up my new clothes I headed back outside. The second most thing to food I knew to be money. And I knew from recent experience that fighting things outside and taking their things was a great way to make some fast money. The money I had started my trip with was running low, even after the boost from my first short adventure.

I traveled around the path and decided to take a quick dip into the water as it was a lovely sunny day, after the rain had cleared up that was. I tried my luck at catching some fish, but they did not want to be cached! After I tried to spear a fish with my dagger it quickly darted out of the way and started attacking me. By the time I had fled to the shore more dark storm clouds were rolling in. I was soaked to the bone and If I couldn’t find anywhere to shelter I’d freeze.

I saw fro the beach what looked like a small dock, there didn’t seem to be any encloses spaces and the structure was pretty open, but there would be a roof over my head at least. As I got closer I noticed there was a small, unoccupied ticket booth at the front. I hopped over the front desk and took shelter inside. It wasn’t warm but the wind couldent get to me. Thinking to myself as the storm passed, about my short adventure so far, all be it a wet one. I had enjoyed myself, quite a lot. I had never felt such a thrill as when I had traveled around these islands. I knew my trip had only just begun. But thinking of what was ahead for me, the wet and cold didn’t feel so bad.

Closed beta report Day 6

Today was the day I vowed to one up that pervert armoury owner, I’d find some way to prove I was a high enough “level” to that weirdo. My plan was threefold. First I’d collect enough quest reports to drop on his desk in order to brake it, not very hard, those kefka sure love their paperwork!. Second I’d rampage through the Prontera fields Tearing up any monster I came across, and any novice I came across, there are enough of them to repopulate. And Third, make him a pretty little necklace out of wolf fangs, one from each individual wolf.

As I walked into the armour shop the store keeper turned to me instantly and offered me the armour I had been requesting the day before. I didn’t even get to show him my proof, oh no just slapped them down on the counter and asked for payment. Quite the waste of time! However I had my new armour. Too bad the more defensive armour looked well, Let’s just say I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing THAT! Instead I sacrificed functionality for fashion, lets face it, I’m too good to get hit!

With my new equipment I decided to go on another trip through the lands of Prontera, this time, I’d take no prisoners, take no lip from those Drops, and take pie! It’s a long walk after all.

Leaving through the Southgate I took to the dusty farm roads. Every step throwing up some dust, hard to imagine a dusty path, amidst the lush greenery and farmland. As I travelled closer to the coast the trees opened out a little more and I could clearly see the win rising in the sky with the light creeping over the sea little by little lighting up the waters.

As I travelled westwards the lush green farm land slowly turned to boggy marsh land, as rivers from all over the area turned into a delta, the whole area was green and blue, with small outposts scattered across the lands, left over from some forgotten conflict. This quagmire did not last long, the flat coast land was soon replaced by dry hills leading up a winding path into the mountains.

As I ascended higher and higher up the windy paths, I passed close to several rivers and waterfalls, along the banks of these rivers were outposts of the vicious, yet some what enthusiastic with their banner decorations, mountain bandits. These “vicious” men attempted several attacks on me, and I have to say they have balls of steel. I smashed my shield around their face, they didn’t flinch! I kicked them square in their happy zone, nothing. No thing could phase these guys!

As I travelled around further north I ended up, quickly descending down the mountains and came across the smaller camp of the cat bandits. They act hard but they can be really sweet, I later met one on them inside Prontera, he asked me if I could help him but unfortunately I had to bee off to the palace on the end of my trip.

The last section of my trip was a detailed look through Prontera, and trying to scale different buildings. I managed to climb up a few, that was before the residents started getting annoyed. It was getting later in the day, people were home cooking. The last thing they wanted was to see me clambering past the window then thumping away on the roof. It wasn’t going too badly until this one massive woman… I think I’ll stop there.

Closed bera report Day 5

Browsing the armour in certain shops, It always takes up vast amounts of time doesn’t it? Well Replace the words and statistics with Klingon and I might have a chance to understand just what they do. Though I doubt that Kaplah and Karrack will be used much.

Inquiring on the coast on some nice breast piece, The store keeper informed me of certain restrictions on the purchasing of equipment. According to him I required to be of a certain “level” to wear this armour. Well not one to understand just how fighting vast swarms of rabbits and cows helps me put on a shirt with some pads. My theory is that this guy has sat in his store the past 20 years and has formed some sick fetish involving wasting vast amounts of time of all that wished to shop with him. Though I was not going to let him get to me, And that armour would be mine!

Travelling out into the Prontera fields was starting to become a frequent event. Weapons wear down and armour gets easily destroyed from the wild beasts in these farms. The blacksmith became a close friend and due to his conversing with many adventurers from all over he had become a wealth of information. Through his frequent advice I was able to find many tasks from the residents of Prontera.

After having my equipment fixed up and shining He directed me towards the tavern, apparently the waitress there has frequent contact with the farmers south of Prontera from their frequent shipments, as well as relaying their advertisements for assistance through her. After selling her some items of interest she told me of some work that was needed out in the fields, and I had no idea just how much work.

Travelling the roads of Prontera can wear you out as it is, But travelling wile carting along large amounts of equipment, harvesting crops, milking cows, sorting our bug infestations, even rescuing lost possessions stolen by the mice men. It all adds up to some very tiring work! However with lots of work comes lots of experience in the ways of “life” as that demented shopkeeper put it.

Closed beta report Day 4

Exploration and adventure, that’s what Our role is meant to be, right?

The day started much as any other, an early start for me and my comrades, the fourth in a row and the fatigue was starting to grow. A planned assault on the culverts, ordained by the Prontera guard was to be launched at dawn. The only problem being our commander for the assault, Shoes, had been taken ill with chronic diarrhoea, or he overslept. I can not be sure.

Waiting in Prontera and talking to the citizens I heard many tales of the far off lands, and of great machines and a city thick in smoke and darkness. The allure of adventure was too great, the trip had to be made.

A small hike to the docks later, and resisting the allure of the street corner residents, I arrived at the pier, rushing towards the gangplank as the ship readied to depart, One flying jump later and I had made the boat, just.

As the boat closed in on our destination a thick fog started to roll in over the seas however as time rolled on and we approached what I knew to be land the thick fog remained, until out from nowhere a great city, although on further inspection this “great” city was a ruin of epic proportions.

A city of iron and steel, a thick fog, or was it smog, blanketing the floor, wire fences, and frown lifeless earth. I could not stand this barren waste land and left for the city gates as fast as I could. All I found was a great metallic tower, destroyed, ruined in the barren war torn lands. This I could not take, I had travelled too far from the fertile lands, remembering the enchantment placed on me by the kefra to return hone, sure there was a price to pay, but the choking air had taken its toll.

As I reappeared in the capital I came to the sudden realisation that there was no ground beneath my feet, as I landed, head first, in the reservoir. As I sunk deeper before me laid the entrance to the Prontera culverts. A large intertwined network of sewers that my group and I planned to traverse, and seeing as we had nothing better to do, we decided what the hell. We through caution, and our lives to the wind, and lost both. Those little bugs can hit hard, and respawn fast!

Closed beta report Day 3

The world can be bereft of joy, bereft of laughter, bereft of, a world?

The bell toll tang clear as the gates of the world opened and the light from Midgard shone through the darkness, before being quickly slammed ion my face. As soon as the servers opened and I raced online to chance to Swordman, a different kind of joy grasped my soul, I say joy, and I really mean intense anger and loathing.

As the gates reopened (4 hours later after fixing my pc) I charged head long past the milestones on the road oto Prontera, and as quick as that I had become a swordsman. But this conversion was not so easy as to be expressed in one small stroke. This required a voyage of greater proportions, and thus the repeated traversing of the seas had begun.

The voyage to Hodd, to learn from the great sword master… you know that guy that sells us skill books. As the ship docked I barley managed to jump aboard (literally) and the ship took off. Unlike past voyages with friends or others, I was totally alone. I had no choice but to entertain myself, though with only the sea and myself, There was only one thing to do, and that was to climb.

Exploring the stern of the ship I came across some rigging that climbed the heights right to the main mast, and it was just steep enough that I could climb. The upper deck, normally off-limits to passengers was below me, ready to be exploited! I had my concerns that the captain, a large and self conscious cross-dressing man may reserve this space for his own deeds, though thankfully if this were true today was cloudy and not a good day to be on deck.

A large round trip, the first of many, This time skills were collected and all level five and above skills were stored with he kefka guy, He’s hot, and has a certain charm, though some may raise concerns about no cute maids in town.

Now fashion may not be to everyone’s tastes, but hey, I like male belly shirts, but . . . not this one, a belly shirt come polo shirt come long sleeve. Now this required another trip back to Hodd, and another voyage across the seas. However a quick stop off in my inventory revealed the great secret of jewels, now you may think that strange object you collected that looks like an eye, is an eye, or some strange item, however due to the miracle of modern magics these jewels can transform your weapon, imbuing it with special powers, and changing its style considerably.

Now these new styles shall depend on your job as well as your weapon, I decided that the monsters in the secret levelling pot did not have the potential to face this weapon truly in battle. However shoes proved a good target for my power.

Closed beta report Day 2

Welcome to the world. A place of magic, monsters, mayhem and maddening disconnections.

Today was as I could see it one of those days. We as English speakers can not read the quest information, so we really can’t level fast, at all. For us life is a grind of killing and well, disconnecting.

The day started with a trip through the isle of Pukui in the north western sea of the newbie isles. Killing, maiming, then getting jumped by their big brother. This is the life of a level 7 character. Or so I thought. After learning the secrets of weapon upgrading and a few trips back to town a level five weapon was in my hands, at level eight I am still far behind the Koreans, but It’s the fun that counts.

Travelling with my two companions, the new ART member Kamuiix and the mute Poukram, we decided that these Pukui were far too dull and slow, the grind was starting to wear on our minds, a grind that was elevated by jumping off the cliff into the sea. A short swim and a lot of angry mermaids later we arrived in the heart land of the exiled mermen.

You may think these mermen are easy, however when you are at the outer reaches of their domain, you don’t have much chance for backup. Running as fast as your legs can carry you does tend to help you out a lot. And run we did, headlong into the bandit camp, swords at the ready, teeth grinding, ready to pounce, However the problem was that there was naught to pounce upon. The bandits had been pushed out of their homes by a much greater menace, Korean Novices.

Not to be disheartened by our failure we launched a full scale mini siege ion the merman beachhead. Charging through their front lines and setting up camp on the cliff face killing any mermen who dated some our way. The exp was ok, the drops were fantastic. But one by one well fell to the power of the one ring… I mean the one merman, that’s right, we only ever died when the other two of us were, for lack of a better word dozing off….

Shoes adventurer of the universe, and my trousers seems to have had issues with RO2 as when you disconnect right after selling a lot of items, you tend to loose the items, and the money.

However his is worsened when you happen, like me, to loose 1 zeny (10000 rufi) and 8000 rufi, approximately the amount of money you get from grinding to level seven all out. As you can guess I was rather pissed, and stormed off to make a sandwich. Recharged with the power of cheese and ham (a powerful combination to fight the forces of evil I’ll have you know) I rethought my battle plans, and changed my target, and my sights, towards the capital, Prontera.

The whipping seas, the ocean breeze, the one Korean guy who liked my dancing so much he gave me a kiss on the cheek. Yes that’s what adventure is! Pirating too but that’s a story for another day.

As I arrived in the town that I had travelled to so briefly the day before, I Had a plan, I was going to find something interesting, or die several times trying. A short stop to shop for maps in the capital and I burst out of the western gates of the city. To my surprise I saw a cute little cow sized ant thing, cute, but not as cute as that Drops over there!

Look at the cute little drops, he wobbles in such a sweet way doesn’t he? Yes he does, right before he jumps on your face and starts eating you! Drops are aggressive, and have PMS the likes of witch I’ve never seen, these guys are fast and they don’t give up till you are in their belly!

That running I mentioned before? Running is your friend!
